Our Story Profile - Our Jersey

Did you know we were originally called Lugarno-Peakhurst Soccer Club when we were formed in 1962 by our Fourfathers – Bill McAfee, Ken Derrett, Harry Brown and Cyril Heness.

But did you also know our first playing jersey was a ‘turquoise blue’ jersey! But why a turquoise blue, legend has it Phyllis Brown (wife of Harry) was the ‘culprit’ and her reason was she liked the colour and thought it would look great against the green fields. Well it’s not really legend, it was actually investigated back in 1992 and involved an early morning call to Gloucester to finally work it out. We also found out Cyril and his wife Majorie can lay claim to designing the club’s original jersey, but not only did Majorie help with the design she pulled out the Singer sewing machine, bought all the turquoise blue from nearby Maloufs Clothing Store at Riverwood and put together the club’s first strip.

The club wore the turquoise blue until 1970, but after a healthy debate the club decided to switch to ‘tangerine’ (orange). This colour we used mainly for our keepers at the time (with a splash of gold) and the reason we decided to go down this path was there was just too many blue teams in the district. Plus tangerine was a standout colour being readily recognisable by team members when their eyes were on the ball.

Many years had gone past and the only memory of the original jersey was from photos, that was until one fortunate day in 2011, then committee member and life member (and current long term sponsor from ‘Brabond Brakes’) Paul Burt’s neighbour Jan Noonan was moving house and asked Paul if the club would be interest in her son’s Brett old jersey! Would the club be interested, till then the legendary ‘turquoise blue’ jersey was believed to be extinct but out of the bottom of an old tallboy it reappeared, of course the club would be interested.

Paul gave the jersey to the club and when he left the committee in 2016 it was presented to him by then president John Taylor as a parting gift after the club had framed it up with a picture of our first premiership side, the mighty 1964 ‘9Bs’. After the completion of our current facilities in 2020 which included a Club Room, Paul kindly donated it back to the club and it is proudly hung first in this room.

Unfortunately Brett Noonan has since moved to Brisbane and couldn’t join Paul for photo with his old jersey, but what a great discovery and a massive thank you to both the Noonan and Burt families for this great slice of history as we enter our 60th Season!

So what’s happened to the turquoise blue in 2022. Have we forgotten our history and just moved on totally with the tangerine? Of course we haven’t and starting with our new logo, can you see the turquoise blue ball & boarder along with our current tangerine in the background? Also watch out for when two Lugarno teams go head to head in 2022 & onwards, with our new away strip representing our glorious past plus many more things showcasing our turquoise blue roots during the year as we celebrate our 60 years!
